A-Hoy! Welcome to Afterguard Sailing Academy
Afterguard Sailing Academy teaches sailing on San Francisco Bay and waters of the world. Afterguard is an American Sailing Academy Certified Education Facility dedicated to provide a non-yelling family approach to learning to sail. Among our adult and youth students, couples and families can learn to sail together as a crew. Afterguard provides ASA instruction and Certifications for all levels of sailors – Basics through Ocean Passage Making for beginners to instructors.
LESSONS - Afterguard provides an affordable option to learning to sail in one of the most beautifully and challenging pieces of water in the USA, San Francisco Bay. It only takes 2 persons to schedule a course and courses are limited to 4 persons for all afloat courses per boat. Call if an Afterguard’s schedule does not fit into yours.
Adventure Learning options around the globe become a fun way to learn. Afterguard offers three Adventure Learning trips a year. Afterguard also offers sailing practice outings and introductory daytime sails on both the protected Oakland Alameda Estuary and in the spirited winds in sight of the Golden Gate.
PRACTICE - Afterguard students may practice with our boats between and during courses but we do not, as a policy, rent boats. We can refer to those who do with a variety of boats and price ranges. We often sail on Thursday nights to practice what’s been learned returning in time to enjoy Sea Shanties at Quinn’s while we toss peanut shells on the floor with the rest of the fans of the music of the sea.
JUST SAILING - If interested in skippered charters, Afterguard can take you sailing. We can arrange events of any size on sail and power yachts. Our training fleet of three boats are augmented by good relations many types of vessels and charter groups. We know who to call for you to make your event just the way you want it and can arrange or provide catering or music for the event.
YOUTH & NON-PROFIT PROGRAMS - Afterguard Sailing Academy is also a base that supports youth programs i.e., Sierra Ship #3 taking youth from the Sierra foothills out on vessels to round out their Sea Scout education. ASA Certified sailors can volunteer to participate as skipper or crew for Thursday night group outings, join as crew on Bay charters or work with us in providing youth and those less fortunate an opportunity to sail. Lessons taken with Afterguard help us care for the vessels we maintain for our non-profit programs.
AREA REQUIREMENTS - To sail San Francisco Bay ASA or USSA Basic Coastal Cruising certification is required, as the minimum, to rent vessels up to 30.’ Bare Boat Charter is required for larger boats. If certified but not familiar with tides, currents and strong winds of SF Bay, going out with an instructor for a day is a great way to get comfortable with local conditions before chartering. San Francisco Bay is a great place to sail. If not certified but capable sailors, schedule a challenge to obtain certification. Challenges are reasonable and take half to a whole day of on the water and written testing.
